There is a golden rule when it comes to photographing weddings, and that is if you are getting paid doing it, but are not quite sure what you are doing, rather stop doing it. You are only going to get yourself into trouble. You don't want the groom and bride finding out that you chopped their heads off in almost every picture, or the sun has flared the lens and you can't make out anything. The following tips on photographing your wedding will help you get on the right track.

• Only One Chance

That is true! There is no second chance. The bride and groom have prepared this day since they first spoke of it. It costs loads of money, and you need the skills. They paid for a professional photographer for their wedding and that must show in your work. Remember, you do not have to produce something that will bring you an award. All you need is to be polite, courteous, happy, on time and efficient.

• Liable or Reliable?

You are 100% trusted when asked to photograph a wedding. The couple has more on their plates on that day and you should be their last concern. Your photographs should be something that they and you will be proud of.

• Have You Got It?

Have you bothered to meet the congregation? Have you done your practice run - visited the reception and the church and those perfect spots for those special shots? No? You are far from ready? Prepare yourself for their day. Don't embarrass the couple and yourself. "I am honored to photograph your wedding, Thelma… I mean Louise". Prepare yourself!

• What Camera Should Be Used?

Many would say that photographers make the images and not the equipment. To a certain extent this is true. Don't go snapping off shots with a compact camera. An 8-mega pixel camera or a 35mm SLR camera promises clear A1 prints. Have portable lights with you in case of bad weather or indoor lighting conditions. Use these tips on photographing your wedding to ensure everyone remains happy and looks gorgeous!
