Food, love, money. Those are the primary drives of human beings. Let's ignore the first two and focus on money here. Every day thousands of surfers hit the Internet hoping to find their path to riches. One popular path is down the road of internet marketing online affiliate programs.

Basically, an affiliate program is a commission program wherein the business owner agrees to pay you a percentage of every sale that you're able to generate for his or her business. It isn't that different from a traditional bricks-and-mortar business where the business owner would hire salespeople to hit the streets with their products in hand. The basic concept is the same but luckily with sophisticated tracking software, you just need to find people interested enough to visit the merchant's website. Normally, he handles everything from there.

Affiliate programs can be very appealing to many online marketers. Usually the commissions are very fair, especially on downloadable or digital products like software and ebooks and as the affiliate you don't have to deal with any customer service issues. You are basically only responsible for driving traffic to your partner's site.

However, the problem with Internet marketing online affiliate programs is that everyone is flogging them. The guys that own the products are such good marketers and they make their affiliate programs so irresistable that everyone joins them. The result is that each affiliate is not only competing with all the other affiliates but often also the owner of the product himself. And usually, he has the budget and the skills to blow everyone else out of the water. Fortunately, that is changing today as merchants truly dedicated to their affiliates will not compete with them.

Let's also keep in mind that the Internet marketing niche is actually not that big. This is another reason that it is hard to compete. You have these great tools provided by the merchant to get you on the fast track with their Internet marketing online affiliate program but guess what? Everyone else has the exact same tools too! Very quickly the market gets innundated with the exact same messages and the small affiliate with little more than a dream and the desire to succeed often gets crushed.

A better way to become successful in affiliate marketing is to learn from the gurus in the Internet marketing space and then take that knowledge and those teachings and apply them to your own niche market. Ideally this market should be something you have a passion for. It is all fine and good to find a juicy gem of a niche where there is high demand and low supply (exactly what you want in a niche) but if you have no interest in it you'll find it more difficult to compete in it.

On the other hand, if you find a niche that you know a lot about and you enjoy the topic, you'll find it easy to create content and relate to your visitors on a deeper level. You'll also enjoy this experience more and be more dedicated to making it work over the long term.

Now if you're rolling your eyes and thinking, "Oh no. Long term? How long is this going to take?" just hang with me for a second here. Yes, there are ways to make money quickly on the Internet. No doubt about that. However, if you want to create a sustainable business and have the security to fire your boss without worries, then it will take some time and some effort.

This is where the gurus are so brilliant. They make it look so easy and make their affiliates believe that they can become wealthy beyond their dreams without doing anything. Common sense as well as experience (for most of us anyway) tells us that this is just not the case in real life.

Nope. If you need money fast, stick to the easy stuff but if you want to build a real business, find a niche you're passionate about, join an affiliate program related to that niche and go for it. That is the real secret to online success.
