Affiliate marketing, which is a third party services, allows the promotion of products and services by web site publishers. The idea is still novel in India and there are relatively few business groups that have endorsed this marketing method.

In most countries there is a concept called market monopoly. Few brands and business enterprises rule the markets. Such companies, because they have in their hands the tools to manipulate and mold the decisions of the people, play hegemonic roles and do not allow small business groups to have a good share of the market. It is these people who control the popular media and the marketing channels and resources.

Affiliate marketing has the power to challenge the market monopoly and start new market trends. The medium or distribution channels are the web sites, which can be hired by even small business enterprises. By advertising and promoting their products on the target oriented web sites, the demand for products and services provided by local players can be increased to a large extent. Since, it would require increased participation and involvement of the people; somebody has to take the responsibility of mobilizing the resources. The most likely to succeed in this case are the affiliate networks.

The response from affiliate networks in India has been halfhearted. There are score of networks that have entered into this domain and started providing their services. However, a large number of business entities still are unaware of the purpose that affiliate marketing serves.

Asia has more than the double number of Internet users in North America. In India alone, there are 60 million Internet users. However, the spending on Internet advertising or affiliate marketing is significantly poor. The scanty funds devoted to online marketing or affiliate marketing won't help the industry to grow at a good pace. Therefore, the industry lagging far behind seems to be obvious, unless the networks, advertisers and publishers come for the rescue.

It is very important that proper checks and measures so as to guard against wrong and unethical practices be devised. This is the first stage or just the inception of affiliates marketing in India, and early contemplation can help in the long run. The e-commerce and associated industries have to show a real zeal and support it till it gets going on its own.
