Are you struggling to obtain a high search engine ranking for your main keywords? Are you unsure as to why you are unable to obtain a top five position for your main key phrases? If you have answered yes to either or both of these questions then this article could well be of interest and benefit to you.
My name is Stephen Hill, I am often asked to assess people's websites and to advise as to how they can improve their search engine ranking position. These webmasters are looking for web promotion advice and tips; however the first point of call is to check out their website to see if they are making any elementary mistakes. These mistakes, which most of the webmasters are truly unaware of, can basically stop a website from gaining a top search engine position; they can even lead to some form of penalty or at worse a ban.
The most common of these errors is an over use of duplicate content, content which has usually been taken from an article marketing directory. I personally do not like to have any duplicate content on my main websites, for me it is just plain lazy.
Another mistake is to sell links to other webmasters on your site. There has recently been a crackdown on this practice which has been widely debated on the SEO forums. Paid links are a definite no go and to continue selling links without using the no follow tag is likely to seriously damage your site.
Excessive link exchanges are also now frowned upon by the major search engines. This may have worked a few years ago but this form of web promotion is old news, people really have to understand that the rules have now changed and that they need to move with these changes.
The content to your site should be regularly updated and it is also a good idea to give your site a makeover from time to time.
