Southern Comforts - Mozambique Holiday Packages
Three months after the Christmas season and I was already ready for another holiday. So when Dave told me he had booked us a Mozambique holiday package as his gift for my upcoming birthday, I had no idea it entailed 24 days of African bliss.
At first Botswana...
When we crossed the border from South Africa to Botswana, the land looked dry, but the closer we got to the Okavango Delta, the greener the surroundings were getting. It kind of reminded me of the saying "the grass is greener on the other side", which in this case proved to be right.
Botswana was beautiful and our stay there breathtaking. It was during our afternoon cruise when we saw not only a herd of elephant's drinking water at the river, but the rest of the big five on our drive later too. Everything seemed so serene, so at peace with life, even the lion's were just lazing around in the shadow of a tree.
Onto Vic Falls...
By day four we were by the Victoria Falls. This was the first time I saw the big falls. I've always known the waterfall as the Victoria Falls, but the guide told us that to the locals it is also know as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means "the smoke that thunders". This of course made total sense because it sounded like continues thunder as the water plummeted down. I just wish we brought rain jackets instead of umbrellas because they really weren't much of any use to us. It was especially funny to see Dave struggle to take photos and keep his camera dry. Don't know why he struggled, but his stubbornness did not allow for any advice to better the situation.
A river camp...
From Vic falls we travelled through to Zambia where we set up camp on the banks of the Zambezi River. Lazy sunsets with a beer in the hand, surrounded by strangers who quickly came to feel like friends, that's what I would call a good way to celebrate your birthday. They joined Dave and I around the campfire and what started as strangers wishing me a happy birthday soon turned into a big party amongst friends. I'm not sure what time we went to bed, but it didn't really matter because I was at my happiest yet.
Not exactly my scene...
The next morning we left for two days on canoes on the Zambezi River. Dave was in his element, the same man who couldn't keep his camera dry was now the one smiling from ear to ear, while I on the other hand was not exactly ecstatic by this trip, but I figured to just pull up my socks and do it. It wasn't because it was difficult or anything, I just prefer the safety of ground underneath my feet.
When we eventually got back on track at Lusaka, we continued our travels to Lake Malawi, Mount Mulanje, across the Zambezi again, and into Mozambique.
Mozambique you beauty...
On day 20 we eventually set up camp amid palm groves and sand dunes, right by the ocean. Dave and I had been trying to travel to Mozambique as much as possible since we are both avid divers. Mozambique is any water-sport enthusiast's dream! The beaches are beautiful, the ocean water warm and clear, which all ads up to the perfect end to a great 24 days of African holiday.
If you had to ask me if I'd do this holiday package deal again I would not even flinch to answer yes. Some might think it's too much to do in a short period of time. I think that you get to see the best of this world, Africa's best safaris and beaches all in one trip. What more can you ask for?
